I'm excited to report that I just signed and returned a letter of agreement to have my work represented by the Vivian Beck Agency. What a delight to finally be able to turn the marketing portion of writing over to a professional so that I can concentrate on just writing the books. I've been praying for this for a long, long time.
And what a blessing to connect with an agent who really gets my work--my characters, plot, and spiritual thread. Vivian's exact words: "Your story gave me goose bumps." I feel confident her enthusiasm will carry over as she talks with editors about my work, and that's going to be the key in finally landing the first of many publishing contracts.
Believe me, I've done my homework. Attended conference workshops on finding a good agent. Took online courses on agents and what they can and cannot do for a writer. Read articles on how to tell the good ones from the unethical ones. I've been told a hundred times that a bad agent is worse than no agent at all. And that it's even harder to land an agent than it is to get published. I believe it!
But I also know myself--how the very thought of market research makes me want to crawl under a rock. How hard it is to stay on top of publishing trends, or which house is looking for what kind of book. Or which editor left which house and left her authors high and dry. I shall gladly turn over 15% of my advances and royalties to the professional who will guide me through this maze and help me keep my career on track.
Thank you, Vivian, for believing in me! Thank you, Lord, for giving me the determination and talent to make it this far. I know You'll run with me all the way to the finish line . . . and farther!
