Today I'm praising God for the wonders of technology! I got to talk to both my daughters on the phone this morning. Daughter #1 lives in the same state, about 250 miles away. Since my husband is retired SBC, our domestic long-distance plan is unbeatable, so the cost of those calls is negligible. Daughter #2 currently resides overseas, so in the past, a phone call meant a major splurge. But today my 15 minutes of conversation with D#2 cost less than $3 total, about 15 cents a minute. And all thanks to a wonderful little free computer program called Skype!
And if both parties use the Internet for the connection, all calls are free. But you can purchase Skype credit and call regular phone numbers from your computer, too, which is what I did this morning. I just plugged in D#2's cell phone number, and seconds later we were connected! To be honest, we had to try a couple of times to get a clear connection, but remember, this is an Internet call to a foreign cell phone. Once we were talking, it was great!
In the days before the Internet and e-mail, I can't even imagine how families coped when they had to be separated by great distances. I miss my daughter and her family like crazy, but 50, 25, or even 10 years ago, it would have been so much harder. Though technology can sometimes be a curse, used correctly (and when it works like it's supposed to) it is truly a blessing.
